A "Notary Public" is an Official of the State of Maryland. They witness that a legal document was signed by the person required to do so, they do not guarantee the validity of the document or its contents. The person must present a valid ID, photo preferred. The person will then sign the document and then the Notary will affix their seal to the document.
The Berlin Police Department offers this service Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9am-3pm. Please call in advance to assure the Notary is available.
The fee for Notary service is set by the State of Maryland and is currently $4.00 per document. Cash, check, or money order, payable to the Berlin Police Department.
To pay in Person: You may appear at the Berlin Police Department 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday thru Friday.
To pay by Mail: Print your name and address at the bottom of the ticket on the back. Sign and return the ticket with payment and mail to Berlin Police Department, 10 William Street, Berlin, Maryland 21811. The citation number must appear on the check or money order. The check or money order should be made payable to "Berlin Police Department". A fee of $35.00 will be assessed on all returned checks.
To Stand Trial: If you desire to stand trial, you have the absolute right to obtain an attorney to represent you as he/she can give information and assistance concerning the violation. To contest the citation and stand trial, print your name and address at the bottom on the back, sign and check that a trial is requested. Mail the ticket to the Berlin Police Department, 10 William Street, Berlin, Maryland 21811. Trial must be requested within10 days of issuance. You will receive notification of the trial date in the mail. If you are unable to attend the set date, it is your responsibility to write a letter to the court asking for a postponement.
Failure to Pay: If you fail to pay the ticket within 15 days, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a letter notifying them that the original fine has doubled. If the ticket is not paid within 15 days after the letter is sent the Motor Vehicle Administration will be notified and a flag will be placed on the registration. You will not be able to renew your tags until the fine is paid and an additional administrative fee is paid to the Motor Vehicle Administration.
